About CMU
Canton Municipal Utilities (CMU) is a full service municipally owned utility. CMU has successfully provided electricity, water and wastewater services to the city of Canton and surrounding areas for over 100 years and natural gas service for the past 60 years. While utility service is our primary purpose, we have made our resources available to assist and support other departments of the city as well as community wide economic development.
A board of five commissioners appointed to staggered, five-year terms by the city’s Mayor and Board of Alderman governs Canton Municipal Utilities.
The CMU business office, located on the south side of the historic square in downtown Canton, keeps track of close to 9,000 accounts a month and strives for exemplary customer service. The constant emphasis is professionalism and fair treatment of all customers.
The CMU service center, located on Hargon Street, is the center of all CMU operations. The electric, water, wastewater, and gas crews are dispatched from this location. A dispatcher is on duty 24 hours per day, seven days a week to take your call and to address all emergencies. The human resource department and other operations personnel are also located on Hargon Street.
CMU provides natural gas, water, and wastewater service to the new Nissan assembly plant located adjacent to Canton city limits. And although the overall requirements for service have doubled, the number of CMU employees has not changed.
